This chapter has presented the conceptual foundation, empirical validation, and step-by-step procedures used in parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) for the treatment of preschool-age youngsters with conduct problems and their families. In illustrating this approach to parent training, we highlighted the importance of integrating behavioral and traditional therapeutic techniques and dealing with family issues within the structure of the dyadic treatment model. The importance of the continuous link between assessment and treatment to establish therapy goals, guide the course of treatment, and evaluate the outcome was emphasized.
